Paniyaram known as Kuzhi in Tamil, paddu in Kannada and Gunta pongulu in Telugu. This is the perfect way to use left over Idli/Dosa batter. But what, if you don’t have idli/dosa batter? Can i still make it? Yes, of course you can still make these vegetables Paniyaram without Idli/Dosa batter. Those of you are in a hurry but also don’t want to compromise on serving your family with healthy and delicious food this Instant Rava Appe recipe, Appam recipe is for you.

It tastes really good and the bonus is that this Instant Rava Appe recipe, Appam recipe is also very quick to make, there is no grinding or fermentation required just soak it for 15-20 mins and you are set. The best part of these Instant Rava Appe recipe, Appam recipe is that even after they have cooled down they remain soft and thus a perfect dish for lunch boxes or tiffin boxes.

Paniyaram is a widely popular south Indian snack or breakfast. In many regions, it also known as Appam. It can be sweet or savory. Appa can be made with rice flour, idli, dosa batter or using the Rava or Suji. Various Paniyaram recipes are followed across the Southern region of India


Instant Paniyaram Recipe

This Paniyaram recipe is quick and easy to make. Another addition to my quick lunchbox recipe and instant snack recipe collection. Instant Paniyaram is also known as rava appe or Suji Appe.

Unlike traditional paniyaram, for instant appe we do not need to grind or ferment the batter. Instead, the batter of semolina and curd takes 10 minutes to come together, and the addition of cooking soda ferments it instantly.

Hence, this modern version of the traditional paniyaram recipe fits perfectly on the weekday breakfast or snack menu.

These Instant Rava Appe recipe, Appam recipe can be made plain or you can mix any vegetables of your choice to make it more healthy.

Ingredients:

  • Fine Sooji or Rava: I would suggest to use fine suji or rava for instant rava Paniyaram. If you have coarse suji, you can grind them and use them.
  • Vegetables: You can use choices of vegetables like onions, green peppers, carrots, corn, spinach etc.
  • Yogurt: As this recipe is instant and no fermentation, yogurt is using for making this instant recipe for instant fermentation.
  • Spices: we are not using that many spices here. salt and spices as per taste.
  • Fruit Salt or Baking Soda: We are using fruit salt here for this Instant Veggie Paniyaram.
  • Tempering: oil. mustard seeds, urad dal, asafetida and curry leaves.

How to Make Appe?

  • In a mixing bowl, take 2 cups of fine sooji. I suggest to use fine rava instead of coarse suji. If you are using coarse suji, grind them before using.
  • Add 1 cup or 1/2 cup of yogurt (use as per its sourness). Then add 1 cup of water and mix it well, cover it and let sit for 15 minutes.
  • In mean time prepare all the vegetables you are going to use. I have added chopped onions, chopped green peppers, shredded carrots and corn. You can use spinach beetroot whatever you like.
  • Prepare the Paniyaram or appe pan by greasing oil all over it. If you have cast iron pan, make sure it well seasoned.
  • After 15 minutes, check the batter. If the batter needs water, add little bit of water into it and make medium consistency. Add salt to taste. You can add chopped ginger chili or paste.
  • Add all prepare vegetables into this batter. Prepare tadka by adding oil in a Pan, add mustard seeds, urad dal and curry leaves.
  • Pour this Tadka into the batter. Now add baking soda or fruit salt, stir immediately and pour immediately. Cover it and cook it on medium flame.
  • When one side cooked, flip them and cook for other side. When they are completely cooked, take them out in serving plate.
  • Serve them with dipping sauces or coconut chutney or tomato chutney.

Tips Tops:

  • To make this instant sooji appe, use the fine Rava or Sooji. Do not use coarse sooji. If you have coarse suji, you can simply grind them and use it to make appe.
  • Before preparing for the batter, be ensure the paniyaram pan is well greased and ready to use.
  • Do not add fruit salt ot baking soda before. Add baking soda when you are ready to make. Adding baking soda or fruit salt, stir quickly and pour immediately into Appe Pan.
  • If you want to store this batter, don’t add fruit salt or baking soda.
  • You can add varieties of vegetables to make this more healthy and flavorful.

  • 1 cup water or as per how suji absorb

  • 1 tbsp ginger chili paste

  • 1 tbsp salt or as per your taste

  • 1/3 cup corn

  • 1/4 cup chopped onions

  • 1/4 cup shredded carrots

  • 1/4 cup green pepper

  • 1 tsp fruit salt

  • 1 tsp oil

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1 tsp urad dal

  • 4 -5 curry leaves
